May 25, 2017 · What Are Ume Plums? Originating in China, ume (梅, うめ) or Japanese plums are the main ingredient used to make Umeboshi (pickled plums) and Japanese plum wine (Umeshu). Ume plums grow on large, broad-leaved trees with a very short growing season. The young bright green fruits are slightly smaller than a golfball, and green to yellowish-green in color.
